Can someone go to heaven if they don't try to live as Jesus lived?

I had a discussion with someone and an interesting topic came up. I know this has been widely debated but I just wanted to get some feedback. I felt that if we say we are a Christian, we must make every effort to walk as Jesus walked to be saved. She said that if you ask Jesus to be saved, believe in Him, and never renounce Him, then you will be saved regardless of how you live your life. I know that we are taught justification by faith alone, but if we truly have faith in Jesus, does it mean that we should be trying to walk as Jesus walked in our everyday lives all the time? She feels that John Doe can believe in Jesus, call himself a Christian, but doesn't need to try to walk as Jesus walked because "it's impossible to walk like Jesus walked." She feels that John Doe has faith while I feel he wouldn't. While I agree that it is impossible to walk like Jesus walked, I believe that if we aren't making every effort to walk as Jesus walked, we can't call ourselves Christians, or say that we possess faith. Just wanted to hear some opinions on this-I'm very open minded (hence I'm asking the question), but I want responses of what you truly believe is right, and not what you want to believe is right. Thanks
