Does my friend like me?

I've been friends with this guy for almost four years now, and we've gotten very close. He said that at one point he said that he liked me but now he says that he doesn't. I like him but i don't want my friends to know. How can I find out without asking him directly? He always welcomes me when we're on a chat, he holds the door open for me when we go to the cafeteria for lunch, and I really want a relationship but I don't want it to be forced.
